It’s time to light up some Rhinos

I finally got around to heading over to RadioShack and picked up some different style LEDs. Some quick work with my hand drill and I was able to mount one of the LEDs to the underside of my Rhino and hook it up to my favorite little breadboard. The LED used is a High Brightness Power LED (Red) and it is mounted to a Space Marines Rhino and is powered by 3V with no additional resistance.

World Maker Faire 2012!

4:02 PM
I had the chance to speak with Brook Drumm and learn more the abilities and short comings of the Printrbot jr. The most obvious concern of anyone purchasing the device (and boy were those an easy sell, as he sold 3 units while we were talking) was the lack of a heated bed, which may cause slippage on the initial layers. He reassured me that this could be overcome with a layer of PLA & acetone/toluene being applied to the painter’s tape layer. I’ll be picking up an LC model because of expanded printing area and lack of a heated bed, but only after I have a few working 3d models in the proper file format.

The Chocolate Swirl.  Producers of delicious cake-pops… well, brownie-pops, and alcohol-infused to boot!  I chose to pig out on one of their specialties, red velvet, after trying out the kahlua and butterscotch rum.  The pops were soft and moist inside the chocolate outer shells.  The prices were great too, $2.50 a pop (actual retail price $2.75/ea). With my purchase, I received a coupon for 10% orders over $40 (up to $200). The code is SWEETS2012 and it’s good for use until 12/31/12.

2:46 PM
While we were looking the steampunk section (it wasn’t real, by the way), we found ourselves a lego tardis and some other familiar figures. I had to look it up after the fact, but these creations are brought to you by the nice people at I LUG NY.

2:30 PM
After much walking around, I can safely say this event is too small to be useful. The number of lines combined with the number of accessible exhibits lead to long waits and often being squeezed out of interesting areas and into the “arts and crafts” section. As for being an official sanctioned Maker Faire, I can definitely say it failed to live up to expectations, much like all events taken out of California and deposited in a lesser form to NYC.

I did enjoy speaking with the gentleman at the Electronic Frontier Foundation booth and ended up donating to them and joining their membership. Remember, you too can donate by visiting their website or purchasing the Humble Bundle 6.

12:35 PM
LUNCH! Mmm 3D printed gyro. Model printer used: lamb.

12:00 PM
The first demo of the day is the one makebot I’m most interested in, Printrbot!

So I’ve got to hand it to Brook, he’s a decent public speaker and I’m definitely glad to have stumbled upon his kickstarter. Definitely interested in the small printer, the 4″x4″ model is suitable for what I’m looking for. Maybe I’ll even start printing warhammer 40k models. I’ll deliver more info later after I get a chance to talk to him.

11:49 AM
The gift shop at the entrance saved me, I was not expecting this overcast weather.

I grabbed a hoodie while I was in the tent. I also amazon-app scanned some items for purchasing later on at cheaper prices online. The sling made a great carrying device.

11:20 AM
Super fancy shuttles for the faire!

11:13 AM
We made it! Alive too!

Hey Guys! I’ll be live blogging most of the day from Maker Faire 2012!

Gentlemann’s D&D – Group Alpha Week 2

Week 2 Summary: Having rested in the trapped ritual-sacrifice chamber of the sewers after stumbling over more freshly killed bodies that were decomposing from the acid of an Ochre Jelly, the group went forward to the last chamber where the group of rats and kobolds grew more numerous after the group healed their wounds. A storm brews outside the cavern, dangerous and deadly, killing the last fleeing kobold after he watched his leader be slain by the group.

Next Meeting – Saturday the 1st of September at 6 PM Eastern (pending brtw’s shoulder surgery)

Gentlemann’s D&D – Group Alpha

Week 1 Summary: After surviving a violent Dragon attack and admiring a nice bearskin rug in the Central Market of Yhaunn, an unnamed group of adventurers escaped into the sewers (with a gnome) where they battled the cities rat infestation before coming to a well which was filled with blood and potions which when activated, spewed blood and empty bottles into the room after one adventurer took a dip in the well’s contents (hearts from the dead bodies the group keeps finding in the sewers).

Next Meeting – Saturday the 25th at 6 PM Eastern
